The prickly pear cactus is a resilient flat padded cactus. It is native to the Americas and is known for its edible pads and sweet fruit. it has long protective, spines and clusters of tiny hair like barbed prickles that easily irritate the skin. It produces bright cup shaped blooms that are yellow and orange. the fruit is an egg shaped red/purple berry with a sweet watermelon like taste. Their flowers attract pollinators. the young pads are edible and can be used like vegetables in soups and tacos. The fruit are eaten raw or made into juice’s jams and candies. Grows best and full sun in Sandy or Rocky soil. They can grow up to 20 ft tall and 15 ft wide.
